How to read your law firm's performance data in GA4, Search Console, and Google Business Profile

There are three free dashboards every law firm should be able to read: Google Analytics 4 (GA4), Google Search Console (GSC), and Google Business Profile (GBP). Each measures a different stage of how a prospective client finds you. None of them, on its own, tells you whether that prospect became a client. Here is how to read each one — and exactly where the trail goes cold.

GA4: what people do once they reach your site

Open Google Analytics and you are looking at on-site behavior: how many people arrived, where they came from, and what they did. For a law firm, four things matter and the rest is noise:

  • Traffic acquisition (Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition): which channel — Organic Search, Paid, Direct, Referral, Organic Social — actually brings visitors. This is your top-of-funnel mix.
  • Key events (formerly 'conversions'): mark the actions that signal intent — a tel: phone-number click, a contact-form submit, a chat open. Until you mark these as key events, GA4 cannot tell you which channel drives leads.
  • Engagement by landing page (Reports → Engagement → Pages and screens): which practice-area pages hold attention and which bounce.
  • Geography (Reports → User → Demographics): confirm your traffic matches your jurisdiction, not a different metro.

The phone-click trap.A GA4 'phone-click' key event tells you someone tapped your number on a mobile page. It does not tell you the call connected, was answered, or lasted more than three seconds. Treat phone-clicks as intent, never as outcome.

Google Search Console: how you show up in Search

Where GA4 measures behavior on your site, Google Search Console measures behavior in the Google results before the click. The Performance report is the one to live in:

  • Queries: the actual searches you appear for. Filter for your practice area plus your city ('car accident lawyer [city]') to see where you rank and where you are merely impressed but not clicked.
  • Clicks, impressions, CTR, average position: rising impressions with flat clicks means you are visible but unconvincing — usually a title-tag or meta-description problem.
  • Pages: which URLs earn the impressions. Thin or missing practice-area pages show up here as gaps.
  • Indexing → Pages: confirm Google has actually indexed your key pages. An unindexed page earns zero — and is also ineligible to be cited in Google's AI Overviews.

Google Business Profile: how you show up on Maps and the local pack

For most firms, the Google Business Profile (the Maps/local listing) drives more phone calls than the website does. Its Performance tab reports:

  • Calls: how many people tapped 'Call' directly from your listing, by day and time.
  • Directions and website clicks: downstream actions from the listing.
  • Searches that showed your profile: the queries that surfaced you on Maps, split by Search vs Maps surface.

Read this one carefully.Business Profile's 'Calls' metric counts calls placed — not calls answered. It is counting the same ring that, 35% of the time, no one at the firm picks up. The chart goes up; the cases do not.

Where all three go dark

Stitch GA4, Search Console, and Business Profile together and you get a complete picture of demand — who searched, who saw you, who clicked, who dialed. Then the picture ends. Every one of these tools stops at the moment of contact. The most expensive question in your firm — of the people who called, which became clients, and what were those cases worth — is answered by none of them.

Which Google tool matters most for a law firm?

There is no single one — they cover different stages. How do I track phone calls in GA4?

Mark a tel: link click as a key event, or pass a call-tracking event into GA4. This captures intent — that someone tried to call. It does not capture whether the call was answered or became a client; for that you need call-outcome data from your intake system.

Can Google Analytics tell me which calls became clients?
